California Exceeds 178,000 Electric Vehicle Chargers, 50% More Than Gas Pumps

The California Energy Commission released data showing that EV Level 2 and DC fast chargers now greatly exceed the number of gas pumps in the state, with more than half of the 178k+ total installed just in 2024 alone. The Commission also found there are more than 700,000 at-home Level 2 chargers installed throughout the state.

Germany’s RWE is building battery storage facility with an output of more than 600 megawatts at Westfalen power plant

The system will have a total capacity of 1.2 GW-hours, and will be able to provide its maximum output for up to two hours at a time to smooth demand for the grid. It’s expected to begin operating by 2028.

Pilot, GM, and EVgo connect travel corridors with EV chargers in over 25 states

More than 130 of a planned 500 stations that will offer 2,000 DC fast chargers in total have been constructed, each including excellent lighting, free WiFi, bathroom facilities, and around-the-clock staffing to provide a safe, convenient experience. EVgo 350kw chargers allow drivers to charge up in as little as 15 minutes, along with pre-paid Plug-and-Charge setups that make recharging even more straightforward than filling up with gas.

Germany makes first payment to start core hydrogen network development

The hydrogen core network will use existing gas pipelines and eventually new construction to make hydrogen accessible from production centers around the country. Hydrogen can be made using excess renewable power from sources like wind and solar to provide safe, convenient storage of emissions-free energy, supplementing other storage solutions like grid-scale batteries and pumped hydro.

Lots of EV news this week, which might seem strange given the way things looked a few months ago as Trump came into office. But in my view, we have already reached the EV tipping point and there’s really no going back, or even slowing down. Charging infrastructure has become serviceable across essentially the entire country, and is approaching gas-station levels of convenience in more densely populated costal areas. Private businesses have seen the positive impacts of offering EV charging, and new innovations from existing players like EVgo and upstarts like Beam Global are providing faster and more consumer friendly options than ever before.

Germany also comes up a lot in this newsletter, partly because they’re having to make up the difference filled by nuclear power that almost every other advances nation has leaned into. It will be interesting to see if the Germans can keep up with the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2045 with only renewable options, or if they’ll eventually be forced to restart nuclear production throughout the country, as the US has been planning for the past few years.

    Weekly Averages:

Total Renewable: 49.16% (down -4.81% from last week)

    Hydro: 7.12% (up 0.22%)

    Solar: 7.65% (up 19.49%)

    Wind: 14.96% (down -16.37%)

    Nuclear: 19.43% (down -4.04%)

The numbers can’t be up every week, with wind falling off particularly hard compared to last week and especially towards the end of this week. Solar made up some of the difference, and continues its upward trend, and this may well be the last week before fall this year where we see renewables at less than 50% of total weekly production.

Fuel Up Ratio: (DC Fast Chargers (12,460)/Gas Stations): 6.34% (up +53, 0.43%)

Joby and Virgin Atlantic Announce Partnership

The planned service, using Joby eVTOL aircraft, could carry four passengers at a time from Heathrow to the city center in under 10 minutes, compared to a car journey that can take up to 80 minutes and train rides that last nearly an hour. Pricing is expected to be “comparable with existing premium ground ridesharing options at launch,” although an expected starting date was not provided.

Germany approves huge investments with Green Party backing

As part of a coalition to take on more debt to stimulate the German economy and increase infrastructure investment, the Green party secured concessions that €100 billion of the €500 billion infrastructure package go into the Climate Transformation Fund. This additional funding should help Germany meet it’s target of carbon neutrality by 2024, with emissions already down more than 45% compared to levels in 1990.

56.8% of all electricity generated in Spain during 2024 came from wind power, photovoltaic, or hydroelectric power

That total is up 10.3% compared to last year, with the greatest share coming from wind power generation at more than 23%. Hydroelectric power increased production by 35.5% compared to 2023, and solar photovoltaic grew by 18.9%. Spain hopes to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Beta completes eVTOL flight demonstrations across Utah

Beta aircraft flew more than 350 miles over three days between six different airports, promoting use cases like medical delivery and travel times reduced by more than 60% between destinations compared to driving. Utah plans to build out a robust network of advanced air mobility (AAM) infrastructure before the 2034 Olympics.

Sometimes innovation and green energy goals can feel far-off, but announcements this week from some of the leaders in electric aviation, Joby and Beta, are really starting to feel like we could be riding in these vehicles within the next 12 months. The use cases are compelling, the services seem reasonably affordable for the service provided, and much of the infrastructure is falling into place. Militaries around the globe have expressed interest, and regulatory agencies like the FAA have signed off on a large majority of their requirements to get vehicles in the air. One thing I’m thinking about—how will these vehicles, especially AAM designs like Beta’s Alia, impact the thousands of smaller airports scattered around the outskirts of large cities around the world?

Europe continues to forge ahead with clean energy production, but the progress hasn’t been without its costs. Germany in particular has been hit hard by the removal of nuclear power from the mix, but European countries have topped the charts for decades for average electricity costs. Spain may actually be striking the best balance (note the 20% nuclear contribution in their mix) with some of the lowest prices on the continent, just a few cents above the US average.

    Hydro: 7.1% (up 4.04%)

    Solar: 6.4% (down -5.53%)

    Wind: 17.89% (up 22.70%)

    Nuclear: 20.25% (up 2.40%)

Look at that! The first week of the year with average total renewable production above 50%, with four days last week over the previous 2025 record high. Nuclear put up its second highest weekly average yet, and wind power saw its highest output for the year so far. Tuesday also saw a unique situation with wind power outproducing nuclear, the first time we’ve seen that since Clean Currents got started.

Gode Wind 3 starts commercial operation in Germany

The latest offshore wind farm to be activated in German waters is now supplying more than 250 MW of power annually, enough to power 250,000 German homes. The 23 200m (660ft) diameter turbines, under construction since 2023, are 40% more efficient than the next largest model, and provide energy at an average cost of 0.08 EUR/KWh.

Honeywell survey highlights eVTOL interest among airline fliers

A Honeywell survey found that more than 95% of respondents would consider using an eVTOL aircraft while traveling, with nearly two out of three Millennials saying they would be enthusiastic about trying the emerging technology. Easier (and less expensive) access to airports was a leading benefit, and more than 40% of respondents were also interested in trips of up to 100 miles between nearby cities.
